SPIRE FUND

Major work needs to be carried out on the spire of St James' Church. What may look like tiles on the spire are in fact cedar shingles, and after many years of weathering many of them need to be replaced as soon as we have the money in hand. The actual extent of the work to be done will not be known until the scaffolding is in place and the roofer can take a closer look. But we reckon that the amount needed will be in excess of £20,000.

Spire last re-shingled in 1952 - All done with ropes! So we have launched a Spire Fund, which currently stands at just over £2,000. we are grateful to those who have already given. Also, more than £700 of this total was raised through the concert at the beginning of May with the Thanet Male Voice Choir. Approaches are being made to charities and trusts who help with the repairs of church buildings. We are still awaiting the outcome of some of these enquiries. Various events are being put on to raise funds, such as the recent concert. If you would like to put on a coffee morning and cakes morning, in aid of the Spire Fund, please go ahead – you are welcome to use the Church Centre of Old School Hall if they are available, so please do check first.
If may be that you have some fund- raising idea to share – in which case please do let us know!

I am taking if for granted that we know that we shall not succeed unless we are praying about it. If we do not actively express our dependence on God in prayer, we do not deserve to reach our total. Our aim must be that, when the bills are paid, we shall not congratulate ourselves on our ideas and efforts but that we shall thank God for his goodness and mercy.

In that spirit of prayerfulness, the simplest and more direct way to see the funds build up is to give. The Gift Day in July will be directed towards the Spire Fund, and Gift Day envelopes will be made available at the back of the Church. And if you are a taxpayer, please do complete the Gift Aid declaration, which will allow us to claim a further amount from the tax-people.
