History of the Church Seventies

1971

  • Church Centre built and opened.

 

1972

  • Centenary of stone laying. Archbishop of Canterbury preached.

 

1974

  • Ninth Vicar inducted, James Watts.

 

1975

  • Visit of Miss Pat Lelliot (our SIMS link) from Chile.
  • St. James' Youth Orchestra performs for the first time on 28 December.

 

1976

  • Summer Fete and Christmas Bazaar introduced into the Church Calendar.
  • Church re-wired and new lighting installed in August.

 

1977

  • Dedication to the Festal Pulpit Fall and book markers (to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee), in July.
  • Holiday Club in August led by Capt. C. Taylor and Capt. D. White, of the Church Army.

 

1978

  • Archbishop of Canterbury preaches on 12 March.
  • New Hymn Books "100 Hymns for Today" donated in memory of Mrs. Whybrow in June..

 

1979

  • Church boiler converted from fuel oil to gas burning in September.
